How We Curate EcomAI Tools: Our Selection Criteria

3 min read · April 2026

EcomAI Tools is a curated directory - not an aggregator. There are 8,000+ apps in the Shopify App Store. We list 51. The gap between those numbers is the work of curation.

This post explains exactly how we decide which tools make it in, how we keep the information accurate, and what "featured" means (and doesn't mean).

The Core Criteria

1. Genuine utility for Shopify operators

The first question is simple: does this tool solve a real problem for a Shopify store operator at a meaningful scale? We look for tools that:

  • Address a specific operational job-to-be-done
  • Work natively with or integrate cleanly with Shopify
  • Save meaningful time or generate meaningful revenue
  • Are used by real operators with real results

Generic SaaS tools with a "Shopify" landing page don't pass this test. Tools where Shopify is the primary use case and the integration is deep do.

2. Product quality

We use the tools we list. Not every tool, and not every feature - but enough to form an honest assessment of the product experience. We also draw on community knowledge: Shopify operators share tool experiences extensively on Twitter, Reddit, and private Slack communities, and we factor that signal in.

Tools with poor UX, broken integrations, or known reliability problems don't make the cut regardless of their marketing.

3. Company viability

A tool is only useful if it keeps working. We consider the company behind each tool: funding, team size, product trajectory, and how long they've been in the ecosystem. We're hesitant to list tools from companies showing distress signals - high churn, declining support quality, or product stagnation.

4. Pricing transparency

We don't list tools that hide pricing entirely behind sales calls for most use cases. If an operator can't assess whether a tool is affordable before booking a demo, we consider that a product problem. Pricing pages should be publicly accessible.

What "Featured" Means

Some tools on EcomAI Tools are "featured" - they appear more prominently in category pages and the homepage. Featured status is paid: tool companies can submit for featured placement at £99/month.

What featured does not affect: editorial assessments, category rankings, review scores, or our recommendation of competing tools. A featured Klaviyo listing doesn't change our recommendation to use Omnisend if that's the right tool for a given store.

We're transparent about this because trust is the product. If operators can't rely on our recommendations being independent, the directory has no value.

How We Keep It Current

Tool landscapes change fast. Pricing updates, acquisitions, new features, and product deterioration all affect recommendations. We update tool profiles when:

  • Pricing changes materially
  • A significant new feature ships
  • We receive operator feedback that contradicts our assessment
  • Ownership changes

The "Last reviewed" date on every tool profile reflects when we last verified the information.

What We Don't Cover

We don't list every tool. Specific categories we've intentionally left out for now:

  • Generic SaaS tools not purpose-built for e-commerce
  • Apps with no track record (less than 6 months in market)
  • Tools in litigation, acquisition uncertainty, or with known data security issues

We'll expand coverage as the directory grows and as new categories mature.

The Goal

The goal of EcomAI Tools is to save Shopify operators the 5-15 hours it takes to research tools properly before making a decision. If we do this well, operators trust our recommendations quickly, find the right tools faster, and spend less time evaluating the wrong ones.

We don't have a commercial interest in any individual tool performing better than alternatives - only in the directory as a whole being accurate and useful.
