About
Google Analytics 4
Google Analytics 4 is the baseline analytics layer for any Shopify store, free and non-negotiable. It tracks traffic by source, user behaviour by session and event, and connects to Google Ads for conversion measurement. The move from Universal Analytics to GA4 introduced a fundamentally different data model based on events rather than sessions, which is more flexible but requires more configuration to get right. For Shopify specifically, getting accurate e-commerce tracking in GA4 requires either the native Shopify Google channel or a third-party connector like LittleData, because the default integration has known data accuracy issues around checkout step tracking. The tool is powerful when configured correctly but does not provide the Shopify-specific attribution or LTV reporting that paid tools like Triple Whale and Polar Analytics deliver out of the box.
Hotjar
Hotjar answers a question that Google Analytics cannot: not just where visitors came from or what they bought, but exactly how they interacted with each page. Click heatmaps show which elements attract attention and which are ignored. Scroll maps reveal how far visitors read before leaving. Session recordings let you watch individual browsing sessions to diagnose usability problems in a way that aggregated data cannot surface. For Shopify stores, this is particularly useful on product detail pages and checkout flows where a confusing layout or broken element costs sales without showing up clearly in conversion rate data. The free plan is generous enough to run meaningful research, though session recording limits apply. Hotjar does not replace a web analytics platform but complements one by explaining the behaviour patterns that traffic data shows but cannot explain.
Key Features
Google Analytics 4
Event-Based Tracking
Tracks every user interaction as an event rather than a pageview. Flexible data model that can capture product views, add-to-cart events, checkout steps, and custom interactions.
E-Commerce Revenue Tracking
Reports on transactions, revenue, product performance, and checkout funnel drop-off when correctly configured. Requires careful Shopify setup to achieve accurate data.
Google Ads Integration
Shares conversion data with Google Ads campaigns for smart bidding optimisation. ROAS reporting available directly from the Analytics interface.
Audience Exploration
Builds custom segments based on behaviour, demographics, and acquisition source. Audiences can be exported directly to Google Ads for retargeting without additional configuration.
Hotjar
Click and Scroll Heatmaps
Aggregate click, move, and scroll data from real visitor sessions into a visual layer over any page. Identifies which elements are attracting interaction and which are being ignored.
Session Recordings
Watch individual visitor sessions as video replays. Filter by device type, traffic source, or specific pages to focus on sessions that include rage clicks, dropped forms, or checkout exits.
Feedback Surveys
Short pop-up surveys triggered on any page by scroll depth, exit intent, or time on page. Collect NPS scores, feature requests, or open-ended feedback from active visitors.
Conversion Funnels
Define a multi-step funnel (product page, cart, checkout, confirmation) and see where visitors drop out at each step. Pairs with session recordings to understand why.
